What is trademark law?
Trademark law protects the trademarks of a company – i.e. logos, company names or product designations. It gives the owner the exclusive right of use. Depending on the application strategy, this protection can be national (e.g. at the DPMA), Europe-wide (EUIPO) or international (e.g. via the WIPO).
Additional registration is required in Switzerland. Our law firm will support you with this – efficiently and via our local partner law firm.
Trademarks can be words (word marks), images (figurative marks) or combinations (word/figurative marks). They have a central function: they show consumers where a product comes from – and can therefore be assigned to specific companies.
A brand therefore makes a significant contribution to brand development and company value.
Registration requires thorough preparation: this includes selecting the right Nice classes and a targeted trademark search. After successful registration, trademark protection is initially valid for ten years – and can be extended indefinitely by paying fees.
